Artist’s Statement

My art's primary focus is on the natural beauty, abstract patterns and inherent rhythms of the landscape. The Pacific Northwest Landscape is an endless inspiration for me.  I enamored with the deep forests and magnificent alpine slopes as well as swampy wetlands and coastal marshes.

In my serious albeit short artistic journey, I find that I am moving towards an increased focus on design and color to relay my personal interaction with the beauty of this earth and my desire to honor and protect it. Thus my work is moving away from strict representation and towards a more  abstract and expressionistic approach.

Reflections in water and trees are frequent themes in my work.  Metaphorically, I choose to paint reflections in water to remind us to also take the time to stand back and truly ponder all of our actions so that we may become optimal stewards of both our environment and our humanity. I choose to celebrate trees as they are vital to a healthy planet and their forms and biology fascinate me.

Artist’s Bio

Sukey Jacobsen is largely a self taught artist, but takes her personal studies very seriously.  She continues to take workshops from some of the most reputable instructors in various media. This provides opportunity for continued growth and insight. She thoroughly embraces discipline, hard work, practice and life long learning.  Currently she is focusing on water media such as watercolor, gouache, acrylic and casein.

Sukey was originally trained as a professional musician and received both BA and MA degrees in early music.  A permanent hand injury forced her to change careers and she obtained an MLS in Library and Information Science and worked for many years as a science and technical research librarian /database designer and developer.

She is an avid hiker and lover of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the Skagit Valley in particular.  She chooses most often to represent this splendor in her works.  Her works may be viewed locally in numerous venues and on her website. She wishes to use every experience for continued improvement in her artistic endeavors.
